Re: Dubai Fire
Haha good final point there Mike, some very shady business and cultural practices at place in this part of the world.

To give Dubai some credit they powers here do have a sense of vision, openness and commercial acumen about them and if you have to live in the Middle East then this really is the place to be. It is however still the Middle East with all the shit that goes with it.

Emaar has done very well and built a good reputation here. Nakheel, Limitless, Damac and many others not so good. And that is being very diplomatic.

Wasn't it Emmar that went tits up and caused the Dubai crash a while back?

Picking a best of anything in some regions of the world is like choosing between diarrhoea and chronic constipation

Re: Dubai Fire
Think it's the developer Emaar rios who own pretty much that whole area.

To be fair they are seen as one of the better developers here and generally have their buildings built to decent spec. I've lived in 2 of their homes, very safe places.

Too early to say what caused it though and we will be very fortunate to hear any concrete information that is reliable right now. Sure this plot will thicken.

Who owns the building?

That will give you a clue.

Re: Dubai Fire
I am sitting at home now about 5k from the Burj Khalifa and the downtown area where the fire is still going on.

Just got back from a mates for a few drinks and am watching the telly coverage now. Authorities here are saying all is under control with no real serious casualties. Hmm...

Very difficult to believe that when you see first hand how poorly building regulations are managed here. This has been at least the third high profile tower block fire in the last couple of years and each time the whole episode is brushed away very quickly with no news reported of anything serious happening.

I guess this is a consequence of the short term mindset here combined with the lack of scrutiny or any free media that can hold authorities to account. A benevolent dictatorship as we tend to call it here.

How very Dubai this whole episode looks at this stage.

Re: Dubai Fire
Dunno if the Address is somewhere you'd wanna be on NYE unless for the view of the fireworks - all the bars there are full of brasses - my ex Russian GF refused to go there as me being a beer bellied old git and her being fit and 14 years younger people'd think she was a brass! Heard from a couple of mates, no casualties apparently

Fireworks aren't the same without a good bonfire, an opportunity for anyone selling roasted chestnuts.

Re: Dubai Fire
OK, thanks. If the Dubai Mall is the same one as the Dubai Mall that was in existence when I was there, it's got to go down as the most shopperless mall in the world - I went 3 times and apart from myself, my housekeeper and the staff, I never saw a soul in each of the visits.

Just seen a picture of the building - don't recognise it so it must have gone up after I left.

I suppose this ups the bar for what ISIS have to do to grab the headlines tonight though...

Re: Dubai Fire
Its the "Address" building opposite the the Burj Khalifa - within probably 250m.

Looks malicious as pointed out earlier if built to UK specification the fire would have been contained. But lets wait for the lowdown.

Sad - an easy target if it is malicious.

My internet's slower than dial-up at the moment. Anyone able to give me a heads-up on where this building is in relation to The Greens and that stupid shopping mall with it's own ski slope?

One of te reason for lack of casualties is because half the places in Dubai are empty.
